Old Testament Textual Criticism

As long as authors have produced texts, there has been a need for textual criticism. One of the most famous errors occurred in a 1631 version of the King James Bible when the printer omitted the critical word “not” from Exod. 20: 14 (the seventh commandment). The text read, “Thou shalt commit adultery,” and the edition became known as the “Wicked Bible.”
